Teachers attend workshops to improve Mathematics teaching

Between November and December, in the Chilean Academy of Sciences, was held the Workshop 2011, organized by researchers at the initiative ReFIP “Resources for Initial Training of Teachers in Mathematics” involving CMM researchers Salomé Martínez and Hector Ramírez. At this conference attended by more than eighty teachers from different districts of Santiago.

“Datos y azar: Representación y comunicación de información en el primer ciclo” was the topic of the first workshop held on November 16. In it the teaching and learning of graphs were analyzed and there was a discussion about the order to be treated the different tools used for the representation of qualitative variables. This activity was also an instance to reflect on the difficulties faced by a teacher in her/his teaching and errors commonly committed.

The second workshop of this series was held last December 21 and discussed the “Números: La necesaria relación entre el sistema decimal y las operaciones aritméticas. “ It discussed the importance of teaching the principles and generation of the decimal numbering system. Also it analyzed its relationship with algorithms learning of arithmetic operations with natural numbers and the need to contextualize these learning through additive and multiplicative situations.

These workshops, along with focus group activities, were used to obtain information regarding the needs of Elementary teachers have to teach mathematics and to receive feedback on current activities in the resources developed by the project.

More activities in 2012

During January 2012 will be held three days of training for academics from universities that have offered their career to pilot the resources produced by the ReFIP project. These activities will be held in Santiago and Concepción.

ReFIP Initiative

Recursos  para la Formación Inicial de Profesores en Matemáticas es realizada bajo el alero del proyecto FONDEF D09I1023 is an inicitive taht last 3 years. The beneficiary institutions of this project are the University of Chile and the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, while the partners are Ediciones SM, Chilean Academy of Sciences and the Ministry of Education.

Its main objective is to contribute to the improvement of mathematics teaching, preparation of future teachers of Elementary Schools in all institutions. To achieve this goal, the researchers created a specific material for future teachers that is relevant to their training, validated through pilot experiences and to interpret the los Estándares de Formación Inicial de Profesores de Enseñanza Básica en matemáticas. It is expected to supplement this material with a more specific text for teacher for teachers, which incorporates the experiences arising from the experiences of use.

The creation of this material is in charge of disciplinary experts and experts in the pedagogy of mathematics, with experience in teacher training and belong to different institutions and regions. This incentive also has the support of international experts in teacher training.
