CMM shares its expertise in metagenomics projects

Through five lectures and four labs, attendees learned about different stages of metabolomics and mathematical tools used to solve various problems that might occur in the study of communities in their natural environments through modern techniques of molecular biology, also called metagenomics analysis.

“The goal of this workshop is to transfer the experience gained by the Mathomics CMM-CRG (see box) in bioinformatic analysis of massive data from metagenomics experiments, many of which have been carried out in BioSigma, thanks to a CORFO-INNOVA project  Chile has installed a latest generation metabolomics platform, “says Alejandro Maass, associate research at the CMM and CRG.

The academic warns that activities like this help the weak formation that exists in Chile on these issues from the bioinformatics point of view. “We hope this workshop will enable various research centers, biotechnology companies, hospitals, etc.., Conduct experiments for measurement and quantification of metabolites in Chile. Sharing our experience, allows a wider community know about these issues and benefit from these techniques, “he adds.

The workshop, which began on September 26 and concludes on Friday also had a field trip to the facilities of BioSigma.

Given the high demand that had this activity, the organizers have thought of a second version, this time aimed at undergraduate students, who for reasons of space could not participate.

Mathomics is a collaborative platform of the Center for Mathematical Modeling and the Center for Genome Regulation at University of Chile, created to play a central role in the development of biotechnological projects, providing state of the art bioinformatics and mathematical modeling tools,  allowing to face these problems from the point of view of Systems Biology.

Mathomics works forming strategic alliances around projects with universities, research centers, public or private companies.

Mathomics is born from the Laboratory of Bioinformatics and Mathematics of the Genome at the Center for Mathematical Modeling and its strategic activities since year 2003 in biomining bioinformatics, in association with the company BioSigma S.A. and a Fondef project.
