The objective of the technical consultation is to improve the definition of the instruments. According to Salomé Martínez, a member of the team in charge of the development math standards, aspects not previously considered can be included as well as different views, misconceptions can be changed, strengthen and create conviction on some topics and, finally, reach a consensus. The project, which began in January 2010, is part of the Program to Promote the Quality of Initial Teacher Training, initiative, developed by the Ministry of Education through CPEIP, which seeks to strengthen the professional training imparted by Pedagogy careers of higher education institutions in the country.

The aim of this project is to define disciplinary knowledge and pedagogical training for future teachers, and those should be a reference for curricular transformation of educational institutions, noting the common minimum targets to be met by a generalist teacher to practice.

On 28 April, members of CMM and CIAE presented the progress of this project language and math to a select group of deans, directors and heads of institutes and departments career which contribute to teacher training. Carmen Sotomayor, director of the Language Standards for Secondary Education team, highlighted the importance and challenge of this work. “It was a hard work of study, learning and professional recycling,” said the expert. “It's something new, that Chile does not have,” she said.

The development of standards started in 2009 for initial teacher training for primary education, which includes students from 1 st to 6 th grade in the areas of Language and Communication and Mathematics (developed by CIAE), as well as history, Geography and Social Sciences and Natural Sciences, by the Centro de Estudios de Políticas y Prácticas en Educación (CEPPE) at the Universidad Católica de Chile.

The technical consultation process of the latter project should be completed in June, after the review of the national consultants, international and deans of faculties of education, then to start the organization and processing of the final report would conclude with a review by the technical counterpart of MINEDUC and its final approval in August 2011.
