SOMACHI and AMS held their first meeting in Pucón

Held at the Gran Hotel Pucón, professors from both, the Department of Mathematical Engineering (DIM) and Associate Researchers of the Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM) such as Alejandro Jofré, Jaime Ortega, Michael Schraudner and Axel Osses took part of the meeting. Besides, Gunther Uhlmann (USA), Matías Courdurier (PUC) and Axel Osses, participated organizing the meeting of Inverse and Control Problems in Partial Differential Equations.

Meanwhile, the Centre for Research in Mathematical Engineering (CI ^ 2MA), Universidad de Concepción, which also includes associate researchers of the CMM, attended teachers Raimund Bürger, Carlos Mora and Rodolfo Rodríguez. Professor Rodríguez gave one of the Plenary Lectures and teachers Bürger and Mora presented talks in thematic sessions.

Alberto Mercado, Eduardo Cerpa and Pedro Gajardo from the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (UTFSM) and external partners researchers of the CMM, also attended the meeting.

Michel Schraudner  (CMM) and Ronnie Pavlov, University of Denver, USA, were participating in parallel in SOMACHI and AMS first meeting and the “VI School on Information and Randomness” held in Pucón between 10 and 14 December.

The purpose of this meeting was to provide an initial scientific framework for young researchers and graduate students to approach to strength the collaboration between Chilean and American mathematicians. The sessions covered more than a dozen different topics of mathematics such as Algebra, Algebraic Geometry, Partial Differential Equations, Dynamical Systems, Inverse Problems, Mathematical Physics, among others, showing the state of the art through the works of both theoretical and applied research and related to other scientific areas such as Biology, Ecology, Geophysics, Engineering and Medicine. Were conducted several panel discussions and social activities in the wonderful town of Pucón. About 20 students from Latin America and USA co-financed by CONICYT and AMS attended the event.

It is expected that the event has resulted in the generation of new research projects and scientific meetings between the two countries in the short term.
