Professor Manuel del Pino is integrated as a Member of the Academia Chilena de Ciencias

Professor Manuel del Pino receives a diploma from the President of the Academia Chile de Ciencias, Professor Juan Asenjo
On Wednesday Sept 22, in the public meeting held and directed by the President of the prestigious institution, Prof. Juan Asenjo, prominent mathematician FCFM engineer, was greeted with praise for its recognized scientific and comprehensive production collaboration with national and foreign researchers.

The ceremony was attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Physical Sciences and Mathematics, Francisco Brieva, the Vice-rector of Academic Affairs of the U. of Chile, Patricio Aceituno, the Director of the FONDECYT program of Conicyt, Maria Elena Boisier, distinguished scientists, colleagues, family and friends.

Passion for science
Welcome and presentation of the new member of the organization, was in charge of the National Science Award 2009, Ricardo Baeza Rodriguez, who said “for the Academy is an honor to welcome a distinguished academic like Manuel del Pino, an excellent mathematical, prolific and powerful partnerships. It is a proud to have him with us, “he said.

In his speech, Baeza remember the beginnings of professor del Pino in science: “Manuel grew up in a scientific environment, linked to mathematics. His father, a professor of mathematics, was the manager of his passion for this discipline, “he said. Baeza added that “always had a curiosity about science, including meteorology, so his level of excellence is not surprising”.

Manuel del Pino entered to the Faculty of Physical Sciences and Mathematics, U. of Chile, where he graduated as Civil Engineer Mathematician in 1987. Later he obtained his Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota in 1992 and worked at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and the University of Chicago. Since 2002 is a professor at the Universidad de Chile.

In his presentation, Baeza reviewed its big scientific production, which to date has achieve  about 110 articles which already have over 1800 citations in ISI journals. In July this year, the ISI Essential Science Indicators placed him at number 63 in most cited mathematicians in the world in the last ten years.

The world of equations
Equations are his passio. Manuel del Pino radiates enthusiasm when talking about partial differential equations and this was reflected in his speech of the admission to the Academy, entitled “The analysis of partial differential equations nonlinear in the natural sciences and mathematics.”The partial differential equations, he pointed out are typically those laws in a mathematical model of a physical phenomenon, biological or various kinds.” In his presentation reviewed examples of the origin of the discipline in the analysis of these equations, and some are new models on theory of biological pattern formation. He also referred to the application of the theory of partial differential equations, the recent solution of some important mathematical problems.
At the end, Dr. del Pino thanked his family, mentors, collaborators and institutions who have supported him in his work. “I want to thank all who have accompanied me and, of course, I Faculty of Mathematics and Physical Sciences at the University of Chile, my lifelong home,” he said excitedly.
The same emotion he felt hours before reading a letter from the Rector of the University of Chile, Prof. Victor Perez, in which the authority values and his work in this university. “For me it was very meaningful to receive this letter, and also have the presence of Dean Brierley and former Dean, Patricio Aceituno,” he said.

On the challenges of being part of the Chilean Academy of Sciences, Professor del Pino said, “This institution has within it many of the great scientists of Chile and become part of this group, I am honored. Moreover, because the Academy has an important role to promote, to the authority, policies to facilitate funding of science, as well as raise awareness of these disciplines. ”

On the future task is clear, says Pine, “we must continue training young talents who devote their lives to research,” he said.

About the Academy
To be elected a Fellow of the Academy in all its qualities are required to be an active scientist, renowned, reliable, and more than 35 years. Active scientific status will be judged by the quality of original research papers published in high-level scientific journals and in books and monographs, and the fact of having been actively cultivating disciplines that some branch of science.
