Ten medalists from the 2008 Inter ScholarTournament of Mathematics (Campeonato Escolar de Matemáticas CMAT) became lastMonday 23 the new grant holders Foundation Andronico Luksic Abaroa. At aceremony held at the Center for Mathematical Modeling of FCFM attended amongothers, family and parents of the schoolchildren, and was chaired by RafaelLabarca, director of CMAT, Jaime San Martín director of CMM and deputy directorof CMAT and Aglae Casanova, General Manager of the Foundation.
This year, the students will be benefitwith $57 thousand Chilean pesos per month, a contribution that may be extendeduntil they complete their university studies demonstrating the same academicexcellence that made them deserving of this benefit.
In 2008, the Foundation gave the first 25scholarships to students who stood out in the Inter School Tournament ofMathematics 2007. Four of the grant holders entered to the University with highscores and because they have kept their good qualifications, the institutionwill continue to support them economically with $89 thousand Chilean pesos permonth.
The assistance provided by the Foundationto the Inter School Tournament of Mathematics meets its mission to supportinnovative projects that promote the development of skills and abilities ofyoung people and children living in deprived conditions.
The CMAT is an activity organized by theCenter for Mathematical Modeling (CMM) of the Faculty of Physical Sciences andMathematics, and the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Universityof Santiago de Chile, together with mathematics departments from five otheruniversities. This tournament began in 2003 and aims to identify new talent inmathematics and has become a platform of integration and a way to break thecycle of poverty.
