Asia-Pacific researchers gather at IT&Telecom Symposium

Recent advances in the development of information technology and telecommunications, are the subject of discussion of more than 50 researchers, from the Asia Pacific region, gathered in the 9th Asia-Pacific Symposium on Information and Telecommunication Technologies, APSITT 2012, that takes place in Chile from 5 to 9 November.

The meeting was opened by the Rector of the University of Chile, Victor Perez, in a ceremony attended by the Undersecretary of Telecommunications, Jorge Atton, President of Fundación Chile, Alvaro Fischer, and the Director of the Center for Mathematical Modeling, Alejandro Jofré.

Along with welcoming visitors, mostly from Japan, the Rector highlighted a number of successful results that have had more than two decades of collaborative work between Chilean and Japanese researchers, from the early introduction of multimedia high speed communications applications at the University of Chile in the 90s, with the support of the telecommunications company NTT, until the recent introduction of photonic networks that are currently used in remote mining operations in real time.

APSITT is an international scientific symposium performed biennially by the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communications Engineers (IEICE) of Japan, together with the IEEE Communicactions Society. This time is hosted by the Center for Mathematical Modeling, University of Chile and the University Federico Santa María.

The program includes a series of sessions to be held in Santiago and Valparaiso, in addition to technical visits to Codelco’s El Teniente and William Cole vineyard in Casablanca.
