International Conference gathers world experts on Variational Analysis at CMM

The Center for Mathematical Modeling, CMM,  has organized the second version of the International Conference on Variational Analysis and Optimization, which started today January 7th, and is gathering more than 70 experts in this field.

This morning´s opening session was headed by Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences of University of Chile, Felipe Alvarez.

As explains Rafael Correa, chief and one of the organizers of this conference,  variational analysis is one of the most important areas from analysis. It begun developing in the mid-twentieth century, and has great relevance in math application and theory of optimization.

“Few times we have achieved to convene this great number of first level mathematicians for a specialized conference in Chile” highlights the researcher. He details that during the three days of activities, both theoretical and applied research work will be presented by 46 high level speakers from all over the world.

This time the Conference is held in honor of the prominent mathematician, Professor Lionel Thibault, one of the foremost contributors to the field of Variational Analysis. In this opportunity, Professor Thibault will be awarded with the Doctor Honoris Causa Medal of the University of Chile, in a ceremony to be held on Wednesday 8.

First conference was organized by CMM´s researchers in 2011, in honor of Professor Rafael Correa.
