ICM video features CMM researchers

Every four years, the International Mathematical Union organizes the International Congress of Mathematicians. This year, it will be in Seoul, South Korea, from 13 to 21 August. The congress is the main world event on Mathematics and it’s the opportunity where the Field Medal is given.

In this context, an ICM related event is the Mathematics in Emerging Nations: Achievements and Opportunities Symposium, where both personal stories of mathematicians and country-specific development stories are exposed in front of an audience of 400 attendees that includes experts and authorities in charge of the public policies for Mathematics promotion in different countries.

Only two countries were invited to show this experience at the event: the host country, South Korea, and Chile. Both will be distinguished for their Mathematics development and are considered examples for other nations because of their achievements in this science field. For example, the growth has been really fast in the South American country: while in 1965 the first PhD in Mathematics arrived to Santiago, in 1984 there were 45 PhD in all around the country. In 2014, it’s calculated that number will increase over 300.

The Mathematics Society of Chile is the institution that will expose these advances to the global audience of the symposium. For that purpose, it is recording a video with different testimonies about the growth of Mathematics in Chile and the benefits this science has brought to the country. Representing the Center of Mathematical Modeling, four researchers talked for the documentary: Alejandro Jofré, Alejandro Maass, Rafael Correa and Patricio Felmer.

The professors highlighted the contribution of the CMM to different fields of the Science, the Economy and the Public Policies using applied mathematics.

“CMM is one of the best examples of the development of Mathematics in Chile” said Samuel Navarro, president of the Mathematics Society.
