Prof. Servet Martínez is co-author of a report on Mining for the Presidency of the Republic

On December 17th of 2014, president of the Republic Michelle Bachelet received the Minería: Una plataforma para el futuro de Chile report, which was written by Mining and Development Committee composed by Servet Martínez, researcher from the Center for Mathematical Modeling of Universidad de Chile (CMM) and other 29 academics, executives, businessmen, experts of the mining industry, representatives from the civil society and experts on public policy, such as former president of the Republic Ricardo Lagos (see Members of the Committee).

The group was convened by Consejo Nacional de Innovación y Desarrollo (CNID), whose vicepresident is Servet Martínez. “The report is an agreement that -with the support of authorities- big mining companies, communities, academics, scientists of different areas reached to project a sustainable mining development, incorporating what is happening in the frontier of science and technology. I think CMM can play an important role in that”, holds the researcher.

During the event, President Bachelet says: “Mining must be a platform to foster the development of new knowledge-intensive activities, an area of environmental sustainability and an example of inclusion and harmonious relations with the communities”.

The report states answers to strengthen the mining activity development, making itself more inclusive and sustainable. The agenda of activities includes goals for the technology development, environment sustainability and exports, among other topics.

Commitments

Big mining companies committed themselves to generate a common agenda on Research and Development, as well as to adopt world-class standards in the relationship with the communities and the environment. In that sense, increasing the number of companies in the program of development of wold-class providers for Mining is a main objective.

President Bachelet also highlighted the goal to have more researchers on Mining, from 330 to 600 in four years: “From now, we are committed to finance with public funds 100 new researcher of excellence in 2016.”

In a third place, the document proposes to help to strengthen the productivity of Mining. This is a priority for the Productivity Committee of Secretary of Economy.

At least, a council with members from the State and mining companies will coordinate a dialogue to build a shared vision about the future of this industry.
