On December 2nd and 3th, Universidad de Chile Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM) and Codelco jointly held the seminar Uses and Applications of the Numerical Model of Stress, with attendance of CMM Researchers, Codelco employees and contractors.
They exposed their works and different methods to carry processes in a mine. Also they exchanged different opinions on mining; so to achieve a knowledge base on software Abaqus, which makes numerical models to do certain moves and works into the mine, for its application in El Teniente.
“We tried to analyze uses of mathematical models for purposes of modeling stress and dynamics in underground mines as El Teniente. We analyzed models of an entire mine, not only local models but also global ones,” said CMM Director Alejandro Jofré.
Codelco workers were quite satisfied with the dialogue emerged at the seminar, emphasizing that all exchanged opinions will serve for future work.
“It is important for us to speak about the views and doubts that our superintendence has and the CMM can give us another point of view and explain us how the academic world can contribute to our work”, said Alejandro Espinosa, head of Mining Design at Codelco’s El Teniente Division Geomechanics Superintendence.
For Sergio Gaete, Specialist Engineer at the same superintendence, the workshop “surpassed our expectations, we had the idea to put together a discussion between us and CMM on subjects that interest us, like improving productivity and safety conditions”.
