Jorge Amaya and Jaime Ortega traveled to Santiago de Compostela (Spain) in January. There the researchers at Universidad de Chile’s Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM) took part in a workshop about Industrial Mathematics with scientists at Instituto Tecnológico de Matemática Industrial (Itmati).
This institute resulted from a three universities’ alliance. They were Universidad de Vigo, Universidade da Coruna, and Universidade de Santiago de Compostela.
The activity aimed to seek common research interests. Attendees also shared experiences on math applications developed by Chilean and Spanish mathematicians.
“They invited us. They knew about Chile and CMM’s work and had a high opinion about that. Moreover, it was an important visit because Spain is a country with a good Math development now. This country should be a privileged partner for us. We have both cultural and historical reasons for that”, said Amaya.
Amaya highlighted the issues on modeling of real industrial problems among the topics discussed. These subjects had in common factors such as the funding and commitment of companies. In particular, the group analyzed optimization models for production in mining and oiling. They also studied physicochemical processes in these areas.
Institute’s authorities and journalists of Galician media also met to the Chilean researchers.
“These meetings served to strengthen the relationship with a research center similar to CMM. We identified common areas of interest and developed exchanges possibilities for undergraduates,” said Amaya. “Itmati is a research center financed by State funds but with strong companies’ support. In that sense, we can draw useful conclusions from this experience. This institute participates in European applied research programs. And this relation can strengthen our own international integration.”
