CMM joined in the 3rd Engineering and Sciences Festival

High demand to know the work of the Center for Mathematical Modeling at Universidad de Chile marked the participation of the center in the 3rd Science and Engineering Festival at Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences.

One stand, conferences, demonstrations, workshops, and visits to CMM’s facilities showed the work of this institution to the general public from October 20th to 22nd.

Activities started on Thursday when CMM raised its stand close to the Department of Mathematical Engineering’s (DIM) at Beauchef 851 yard. In the space, visitors got information about the center and dealt with fun mathematical problems designed by CMM-E and aRPa.

FIC2016 - A talk by Alejandro Maass

In parallel, the event started with a full-house lecture on Genomics by CMM researcher Alejandro Maass. After him, the director Alejandro Jofré gave the conference Internet of Things and Big Data in Mining. Here the audience was encouraged to think about dilemmas of the information technologies of the future in the job. The day ended with the exhibition of Bellos Conceptos, the film to celebrate the DIM’s 50th anniversary.

On Friday, Jaime San Martín‘s presentation CMM: Advanced Maths for a Better Chile deepened in the CMM research. While, Ginés Guerrero also talked how the supercomputing growth in USA and China is similar to the space race between USA and USSR.  The same day, the Education Lab’s workshop had a massive audience. That afternoon, the ‘Dad and Mom, I wanna study Engineering on Math’ forum met DIM student Catalina Pesce, Sales Channel Manager at Metro de Santiago Sebastián Court, data analyst at Telefónica Felipe Núñez, CMM researcher and DIM professor Jaime Ortega. There, they discussed present and future of the labor market for people who is studying or want to study this degree.

School students also visited the CMM facilities on both days.

On Saturday, Festival closed. That day, more than 70 people joined in the aRPa workshop, where they understood problem solving is an essential part of Mathematics and is fun.
