The National Commission for Scientific and Technological Research (Conicyt) published the list of the 30 projects that will receive financing by the Fifth Medium Scale Scientific and Technological contest by Fondequip. These are initiatives presented by 15 universities in the country , that will make available the use of paramount equipment to carry out research in the different areas of knowledge. The proposal presented by the National Laboratory for High Performance Computing (NLHPC) of the Centre for Mathematical Modelling (CMM) of Universidad de Chile has been adjudicated, obtaining as final score a 4,43; that corresponds to “very good” in the grading scale of CONICYT from 1 to 5.
During this call, that granted resources of almost 5.300 million CLP, the number of applications increased, going from 124 to 173 admisible projects. This evidences the great interest and the necessity of the institutions to access to new equipment, to renew obsolete equipment or to just broaden or improve the already existing capacities.
A total of CLP $692.225.620 was adjudicated by Universidad de Chile distributed in five projects, from a total of 30 proposals approved in the last contest. This number represents 16.6% of the total of assigned projects at a national level. The university is the institution with the most number of adjudicated projects.
The Faculty for Physical and Mathematical Sciences of the university adjudicated three of these projects which represent 68.4 % of the resources obtained by Universidad de Chile, totalling $473.679.654. These three projects will allow the purchase and implementation of world class scientific and technological equipment that will be destined mainly to research and development activities.
In the specific case of the NLHPC, the 220 million awarded will be destined to the purchase of an advanced system of processing and supercompute services, which will help improve the existing capacities of the laboratory and as a result help users access more and highest quality resources.
