Jornada de modelamiento matemático para la toma de decisiones en evaluación y gestión pesquera
National scientists and researchers with recognized international experience in stock assessment and fisheries management will meet and share their experience in this activity.
An important eminence that will attend this conference is Ray Hilborn, professor at University of Washington School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, United States, who is an expert in the management and conservation of natural resources. He will speak at Universidad de Chile Center for Mathematical Modeling on January 19th and display a review and comparison of approaches used in fisheries management worldwide. By the way, he will give some specific examples intended to show the diversity that has been used successfully.
“I will provide four examples covering a wide range, including salmon fishing in Alaska, rock lobster in New Zealand, the Alaska pollock fishery, and geoduck in Puget Sound. Finally, I will talk about the role of mathematics and statistics in the fisheries management process,” said the scientist.
Another important guest is Terrance Quinn II, professor at University of Alaska Fairbanks School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences since 1985. Dr. Quinn’s research focuses on the dynamics of fish populations and its application to fisheries management, estimating abundances (fish and whales) and use of sampling theory to practical applications.
CMM researcher Héctor Ramírez will talk about a methodology to propose recovery plans for depleted fisheries: “Our approach allows weigh several objectives that may conflict, for example, recovery objectives, economic (recovery of spawning stock biomass) (ensure a minimum of catches) and social (minimize the impact of proposed recovery plan).”
Academic at USM Department of Mathematics Pedro Gajardo will focus on showing a web platform designed from recent research, to realize the objectives that can be maintained in a sustainable manner given the state current fishery.
This conference is part of the “Control Problems, Analysis & Aplications” (ACPA) Conicyt Anillo project, where academics at UTSFM Department of Mathematics and at Universidad de Chile Center for Mathematical Modeling.
Registration for this workshop is free and is open until January 14, 2016.
