Alejandro Maass distinguished as one of the best professors 2009

They are a source of inspiration and a reference for the students. Their actions reflect the values of our university and the community recognizes this. Therefore, each year the Universidad de Chile makes a stop on its day a day to celebrate the distinction of Best Undergraduate Professors that in the 2009 version awarded 48 academics from different generations, both young ad old, realizing the teachers in this University, are fully active in the eyes of their students.

With a full auditorium this event was celebrated and chaired by the Rector Victor Peréz Vera, who emphasized this institution “is what its people is” and that is why  “experience, prestige and history of excellence of this group are associated to men and women that have devoted their life to the academy and -especially-to teach.”

The authority thought about the inspiring models that honorees have had on their respective stages of learning.

“I'm sure every one who were honored are part of the Universidad de Chile and are dedicated to teach because, someone had marked them, either at family level or at studies level. Each of us has in his/her memory and heart the professor that left a mark and gave him/her  a seal, just like the father, mother and family, they are people who will never forget,” said the Rector.

“I have no doubt that in their minds and their hearts the students have several names and faces of those professors who inspired them, and when they face up to their pupils and students are bringing back to their own past youth figure. And that is what the Universidad de Chile is done in the classroom,” he said.

“Each teachers support their students in the classroom, in everyday conversation, in the academic dialogue, on how they answer a question, in the way to handle a problem, and the way of look into the student eyes and they help them”, stressed the authority.

Teaching as a way of life, the seal that distinguishes our professors

A good professor makes mark on the students’ lives. Because every day is a new challenge, the Universidad de Chile, in the context of the distinction “Best Professor 2009” – gives them an opportunity to express all dedicated to their memories, dreams and expectations.

Teach is a job that shows the center of social commitment and excellence. So, being a university professor demands constant effort and improvement. In this impulse to grow, contributing to the country in a specific way, the Universidad de Chile makes a difference.

A very prestigious and well-kwown was Alejandro Maass, which research area is dynamical systems and also is professor at the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences and researcher at the Center for Mathematical Modeling, was surprised by this award.

“Since I got the degree in the year '89, I've been working during 20 years at the Universidad de Chile,  so for me, this institution is all my life,” he shared.

Maass explained that as professor has had the opportunity to teach PhD students and he feels-completed dedicated to what he considered -” as the best university in the country”
