CMAT rewards talented high school students

With the Teatro Universidad de Chile full of students, parents and teachers, on Monday October 17 held the award ceremony of the IX Mathematics School Tournament (Campeonato Escolar de Matemáticas, CMAT), an activity organized by the Universidad de Santiago and Universidad de Chile and four other Universities and sponsored by the Center for Mathematical Modeling and Fundación Andrónico Luksic.

Students from Arica, Iquique, Antofagasta and Valparaíso, Santiago, Talagante, Los Andes and Rancagua actively participated since April of this year to get a place in the final of this tournament. Only 15 schools did it so.

“For several years, the CMAT has organized this type of competition where talented students, along with committed teachers and hard-working families, leaving aside various times of rest to enjoy learning and competing in this Mathematics Championship. (…) This is an opportunity to congratulate the dedicated students for their time. I'm sure that they and we have learned a lot this year,” said at the award ceremony, Jaime San Martin, director of the Center for Mathematical Modeling and deputy director of the Mathematics School Tournament.

At the time the academic also took the opportunity to thank everyone who made this activity possible. “Undoubtedly the most important part of this championship are the people, students of participating universities, leaving aside many moments of rest, worked very hard in the preparation, collection and correction of tests, for them my first big recognition the work done. “

The CMAT rewards students who have obtained the best results both individually and in groups, as well as better performing schools. This year, in the group mode, the Colegio de lLos Sagrados Corazones de Alameda won gold medal in the levels of First, Second and Third. For the Fouth level the group awarded with the gold medal, corresponded to the Instituto Nacional.

The main objective of CMAT is identifying new talent in mathematics and also becomes an instance of integration, improvement and a way to break the cycle of poverty. This activity also includes the organization of workshops to improve the learning of secondary students in the discipline.
