CMM performs symposium on scientific computation

More thanseventy scientists from various universities and research center worldwidegathered at the “First Symposium on Current & New Trends in ScientificComputing”, activity organized by the Center for Mathematical Modeling ofFCFM, together with French institutions: Center National de la Recherche Scientifique,CNRS, and Université Pierre et MarieCurie at Paris.

Accordingto Carlos Conca, DIMCMM's faculty and member of the organizing committee, conducting the meeting responds primarily to the motivation of the Center tostrengthen links with industry: “The CMM is driving a lot of energy toestablish links with private enterprise and trying to make mathematics acontribution in decision making at the enterprise level.”

During thefour-day symposium, the newest achievements in Applied Mathematics in view ofscientific computing were promoted. Leading researchers in the area of mathematicalmethods and those who begin working in this area were able to discuss theemerging techniques and challenging fields in numerical simulations.

Severalspeakers showed very specific applications on topics where they are doing morebasic research. I think the most concrete examples were in the aerospaceindustry, but there were others in mining, energy and defense, “explainedProfessor Conca.

About the participation of young scientists andstudents, the faculty said he was “pleasantly surprised” and all theknowledge gained from this meeting can be used in the applied projects developedby the Center.

For PascalFrey, a visiting researcher at CMM and organizer of the symposium, the meetingwas also an opportunity to strength the links with France and to further strengthenties with countries like the United States. “We dedicated a full day for shortcourses, which were designed to share the most advanced technologies usedabroad with students. This information will help them to create new ideas, which can be developed during their doctoral degrees, having the opportunity todo it under the co-tutelle systemwith other universities.”
