The 2014 version of Young Talent Award Mathematician finished with a ceremony where two honorable Mentions were gave. This contest was organized by the College of Engineering with the support of the Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM) and other institutions.
On the occasion, the honorable Mentions went to Nicolás Rojas, a fourth-year student of Civil Engineering at the Universidad del Biobío, and Andrés Vidal, a third-year student of Industrial Civil Engineering at the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María, who had to solve a geometric problem. The first place, meanwhile, was declared void.
The competition was born in 2008 and was created by Modesto Collados, graduated from Beauchef Campus that had an intense guild life and showed great interest in Mathematics. His family has continued delivering this prize that convoked about five thousand students this 2014 and alternates each year a challenge on Geometry with a challenge on Numbers.
The CMM support this contest, as well as the Faculty of Mathematics at Universidad Católica. Both institutions have representatives on the jury and, this year, director Alejandro Jofré was delegated by the CMM in the committee.
“For us, as Center for Mathematical Modeling, is a challenge to promote Maths not only between Engineering students, but in the entire community,” Mr. Jofré said.
“During my term, we hope to enhance the relationship with universities, especially, with the Center for Mathematical Modeling of University of Chile,” Cristian Hermansen, new president of the Colegio de Ingenieros, affirmed.
