CMM's researcher participartes in the project for the recovery of the hake

Thanks to the funding from “Fondo de Innovación para la Competitividad” from the Regional Government of Valparaíso the “Quantitative Study of Innovative Tools for Sustainable Recovery Hake” project is being developed. This initiative seeks to reverse the negative stage the fishery of this resource is having in the region.

This innovative project is led by Professor Pedro Gajardo, an Academic at the Department of Mathematics at the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa Maria and researcher at the AM2V, a CMM associate group. Participate in this initiative, both mathematicians and engineers, fishing biologists and representatives associated with hake fishing and agencies responsible for fisheries management.

For Héctor Ramírez, CMM`s researcher and one of the members of the team conducting the study, the main engine of the project is the interaction with key industry players. “In particular, the fishermen, whose claims are not usually backed up with scientific arguments, we hope this project will achieve this because it is not only considering as factors the biological, ecological and fisheries resource, but also social and economic ones.”

The aim of this initiative is to create a computing platform that is useful to quantitatively assess different feasible technically alternatives for the formulation and evaluation of plan recovery for the South Pacific Hake fishery in the Region of Valparaíso. “We intend to integrate tools that we have previously studied from the mathematical point of view and allow us, given the current conditions of the fishery to achieve the maximum value for certain indicators, which we can ensure the future a sustainable extraction. As possible indicators, we consider for example, the biomass of juvenile fish, “said Ramírez.

For the researcher to be part of this initiative has been a very enriching experience. “By the nature of the project we had to work in a multidisciplinary team where the experience of a mathematician is quite valued, since we can model real situations, such as the fishing process and its impact on the evolution of the stock of the species studied. Thus, we can quantify the implications of the decisions taken, “he concludes.
