DIM and CMM bring together mathematiciansaround solitons and traveling solitons

More than fifty mathematicians, mostly foreigners, attended the conference “Asymptotic Dynamics Driven by Solitons and Traveling Fronts in Nonlinear PDE,” which took place between July 11-15.

The activity brought together experts in dispersive equations and diffusion equations. In opnion of the organizers, these two groups perform ralated topics, but do not have the opportunity to carry out activities together, this added with few opportunities to interact.

This meeting was organized in the context of the Proyecto Anillo CAPDE, by researchers Manuel del Pino, Michal Kowalczyk from DIM-CMM and Ignacio Guerra from University of Santiago. On the French side, the organizing committee was composed by Yvan Martel (Université de Versailles), Frank Merle (Université de Cergy-Pontoise and IHES) and Pierre Raphael (Université de Toulouse).

According to del Pino the conference had among its objectives to establish contact with the dispersive equations French group, which is one of the strongest and most prestigious worldwide. “While there is some connection, we do different things and that is why we wanted to learn from them. It's been a very useful and enriching experience, “he says. “This congress is a wonder, he adds, it is unusual to have one of this quality, becuase of the level of the speakers and the combination of topics, that are related but do not usually appear together.”

For the French researcher and organizer of the event, Yvan Martel, with this activity he has been able to start a relationship with the Chilean mathematicians. “I´m glad I opened some relation with Chilean mathematicians. It is common to have very specialized mathematicians, but you have to learn from other speciatiltiess, we have to be wider and for that conferences like this are very useful. “

Since the beginning of Proyecto Anillo CAPDE, its members had considered that one of the three conferences that had to do should be in solitons and traveling Fronts. But its implementation was almost by accident. “Martel and Merle were the guiding teachers of a doctorate who did his undergraduate theses with me, Claudio Muñoz, -del Pino explains-, and when I was contacted to integrate his committee theses, I immediately raised the idea of holding a conference together.”

For Yvan Martel of the reasons why they agreed to do this activity was due to the quality of the DIM-CMM's mathematicians. “I have a very good impression of this group and the training that Claudio received during their undergraduate degree. I'm really impressed, “he says.

Although they have not talked about the possibility of organizing another activities of this nature, del Pino said that this possibility can not be excluded due to the high quality and attendance of this conference.
