More than 2.000 education students, from various universities of the country, began their lessons using new textbooks. These books have been created by the project Fondef “Resources for the Initial Formation of Elementary Teachers,” which main purpose is to contribute to the improvement of the training of future teachers to teach Math.
“To make these texts an important number of mathematicians and educators were convoked, but we also want this to be done in collaboration with the teaching sector, in this sense both degrees in education who are testing these books and their academics, have so much to contribute, “says project director Salomé Martínez.
According to the Center for Mathematical Modeling’s researcher, books are not yet finished in content, but the authors are working in parallel with the testing process. “This will allow suggestions made by the teachers and the students were incorporated into the text, if we considered them necessary.”
To evaluate the effectiveness of the books, students participating in the test should take an exam to test their knowledge teaching mathematics. This exam, which is taken for the first time to education students for Elementary Schools in Chile, was established by the Learning Mathematics for Teaching project and has been translated and adapted by the project researchers Fondef.
The universities involved in these testing of books are: Universidad Católica de Chile, Católica de la Santísima Concepción, de Concepción, de Magallanes, de Playa Ancha, de las Américas, del Bío-Bío, del Desarrollo, Diego Portales, San Sebastián and Santo Tomás.
