On January 14th 2016, Codelco and Universidad de Chile Center for Mathematical Modeling announced the ten winners of PiensaCobre, the first contest that sought the best disruptive theses on mining.
“The enthusiasm, intelligence and creativity of these Young people will contribute to build the future of the national mining. If we don’t address from Chile with our own gifted minds issues the opportunities and challenges the selected theses deal with, nobody will do it for us,” explained CMM director and jury member Alejandro Jofré.
The contest is framed in the agreement signed between Codelco and CMM in June 2015 in order to develop new knowledge and technologies for the mining industry. In the challenge, Universidad de Chile PhD, Master and Undergraduate students from different faculties joined in.
These were the winners and projects unanimously chosen by a panel consisting in Alejandro Jofré itself, Codelco’s board president Óscar Landerretche, Advanced Mining Technology Center Javier Ruiz del Solar; Business and Innovation Manager Jaime Rivera, U. de Chile Mining Engineering Department deputy director Raúl Castro, and El Teniente senior engineer Sergio Gaete.
- Benjamín Obando Vallejos, with ‘Estudio matemático de las ecuaciones de la teoría de mezclas para la compresión de la dinámica de flujos granulares heterogéneos’ thesis (PhD Category).
- Francisca San Martín Robbiano, with ‘Bio-depresión de pirita con Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans en flotación con agua de mar’ (PhD Category).
- Jonhatan Barriga Malgarejo, with ‘Detección y caracterización de objetos metálicos inmersos en material heterogéneo dentro de un contenedor metálico’ (PhD Category).
- Mohammadali Malekitehrani, with ‘Joint simulation of grades and rock types using non-stationary geostatistical models’ (PhD Category).
- Cristián Reyes Ilic, with ‘Modelación de la estabilidad de la mezcla de una suspensión de arcilla con agua de mar’ thesis (Master category).
- Diego Garcés Alarcón, with ‘Estudio de variables que afectan el riesgo de ingreso de agua-barro en minería de Panel Caving’ (Master category).
- Felipe Salas Bravo, with ‘Implementación de un control robusto en el oleaje de un convertidor tipo Teniente’ (Master category).
- Lizeth Sánchez Caballero, with ‘Análisis de la velocidad de extracción y definición de estrategia de operación para mineral saturado en block/panel caving’ (Master category).
- Yadira Sánchez Villarreal, with ‘Determinación y caracterización de las zonas de movimiento en un flujo gravitacional de material granular fino en presencia de humedad’ (Master category).
- Álvaro Riquelme Sandoval, with ‘Influencia de la densidad de muestras en la reconstrucción de cuerpos geológicos’ (Undergraduate category).
Chosen students will receive financial support for fees, subsistence costs and other expenditures.
