After anarduous selection process, only fourteen youths were chosen to be part of thisactivity which has, among other objectives, to make known the doctoral programin Mathematical Modeling given by DIM.
For JaimeOrtega, an organizer of the School, this is a great opportunity for foreignstudents to internalize the work done by the Department and the CMM. “Throughthis experience they learn about the research lines developed here in order tocome and do our doctoral program or to establish some kind of relationshipsthat enable them, for example, cooperating with members of DIM-CMM or in aparticular research project. It is also a way to meet them too. ”
During thethree weeks of this activity, apart from the thematic discussions, theparticipants attended five courses: Introduction to the Theory of Degree, BasicElements of Ergodic Theory, Introduction to Optimal Design, Control andoptimization of bioreactors and Complexity Communicational. “The courseswere chosen in order to represent all the different lines of research ofDIM-CMM,” says Ortega.
In the lastdays of the school, students had to take a test, which it also used as an entryexam for the doctoral program. Who got the best marks were automaticallyaccepted. “This year many of the students had the intention to enter ourPh.D. Those who did not achieve a high qualification, and want to do a Ph.D. withus, they can do the entry exam as all those who want to access to thisdoctoral program “he explains.
“Formany, this was a unique opportunity. They were super excited about the possibility of coming to Chile. It isnoteworthy that for all those students coming from outside of Santiago, theirtravel and stay expenses were funded by the School. There were many students that it was the first time out oftheir country, “concluded the Latin American students participate in theIX Spring School of DIM-CMM, “concluds the Professor.
