Mujeres Chilenas en Ciencias

With the idea to appreciate and highlight the work that scientific place in our country, on Friday, April 15, at 10 am, ‘Mujeres Chilenas en Ciencias’ national video contest as officially presented at the Chilean Academy of Sciences.

The event is organized by Center for Mathematical Modeling at Universidad de Chile (CMM), Chilean Academy of Sciences, Center for the Development of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (Cedenna), and Ianas, Women for Science.

“We invite all people interested in the work of scientists in our country. Women face many obstacles to developing a scientific career of excellence. However, their creativity, talent, and dedication have enabled them to make significant contributions, often unknown,” said Dora Altbir, director of Cedenna and member of the Chilean Academy of Sciences.

“It’s an opportunity that we offer to students and the general public to discover the work of female scientists working throughout the national territory, creating knowledge and achieving higher goals in the scientific development of the country,” said Patricio Felmer, member of Chilean Academy of Sciences and researcher at CMM. “Some are very young, just starting their career, and others have reached relevant goals. We want participants to explore what women do, think and dream. Their successes. Anyway, we want participants portrayed them in all its aspects.”

While, the president of the Chilean Academy of Sciences María Teresa Ruiz stressed “this is an opportunity for all those interested in science, technology, and things to discover, especially students. They can learn how science is done in Chile, what are the questions that scientists want to reveal, what technologies they want to develop, what concerns inspired them, and how is their relationship with nature.”

Innovative contest

The contest invites participants to portray Chilean female scientists in an unprecedented audiovisual piece. It has two categories: one for general public and other school-oriented. The jury will be composed of the Sernam Minister Claudia Pascual Grau; journalist Soledad Onetto González; president of the Chilean Academy of Sciences María Teresa Ruiz González; Conicyt’s Explora director Natalia Mackenzie Felsenhardt; director of Center for Mathematical Modeling Alejandro Jofré Cáceres, and director of Cedenna Dora Altbir Drullinsky.

Nominations will be open until August 9 in the www.cientificaschilenas.cl platform. The winners will be announced during October 2016.

A bright future for the Americas

During the launch, the publication Young women scientists. A bright future for the Americas’ was also presented. It was published by the Inter-American Network of Academies of Sciences (IANAS). Through interviews with women scientists from different countries of America, the text realizes his motivations and interests to devote their life to science.

The book is available in Spanish and English.
