Multidisciplinary meeting analyzes newest research in mathematical modeling for biomedicine in Chile

On June 4th, more than 20 scientists discussed and shared the progress of their research on mathematical modeling in biomedicine. During the event, some attendees had the opportunity to know each other for the first time in the context of a newly developed discipline in Chile.

“We have made this call to a wide range of participants and several works, but with emphasis on those where mathematical modeling was involved,” explained Gino Montecinos, who organized the workshop together with Cristóbal Bertoglio, both members of CMM.

Ten talks were presented, with special emphasis on the simulation of diseases and syndromes of high medical interest. For example, a regional quantification of lung deformations, the study of the mechanical response of an aneurysm in the case of Marfan syndrome, estimation of cardiac fiber from magnetic resonance and the haemodynamical impact of stenoses in internal jugular veins, among others.

“Some of these works have been carried out in collaboration with medical doctors, which shows the practitioner’s interest on the usage of state-of-the-art technologies in order to improve clinical outcomes and hence people’s quality of life,” said Montecinos and Bertoglio.

Claudio García, researcher at Universidad de Santiago, evaluated the meeting positively: “Issues related to cardiovascular tissue modeling were very interesting, because it is an area in which I have been working hard in recent years. Also, I learnt some interesting techniques used by other colleagues to be applied in our group”.

“We expect this symposium to be the first of future meetings and possible scientific collaborations,” concluded the organizers.
