Numerical Analysis Group perform successful international meeting

The traditional Meeting of Numerical Analisys of PartialDifferential Equations, held during the last three years at Valparaiso, movedto the capital,  generating the “Santiago Numérico I”, an activityaimed at interaction and dissemination of this field of mathematics.

The event, held at the Faculty of Mathematics at Pontificia UniversidadCatólica de Chile, was according to Gabriel Gatica -associateresearcher at the CMM and one of the organizers- “a way to motivatestudents and advanced undergraduates interested in Numerical Analysis on EDP's and its many applications. “

During the three days of this activity, foreign speakersunveiled the most significant progress of this area in theinternational arena. Gatica also stressed the intervention of theChilean researchers who fully metone of the objectives proposed for this meeting: “to consolidate atnational level thepresence and influence of the the Numerical Analysis of EDP's Groupfrom Universidad de Concepción.

“SantiagoNumérico I”  brought together about fifty people from majorChilean universities, and from universities and research centers from England,Australia, Brazil, Ecuador, France, Argentina, Ireland, Switzerland andthe United States.

Within the 15 renowned international speakers, Gatica highlighted theparticipation of Peter Jimack and Leszek Demkowicz, University of Texas(USA) and Leeds (England), respectively, who will attend in June aslecturers in the conference “The Mathematics of FiniteElements and Applications” (MAFELAP 2009), the most prestigiousinternational event in the field, which is run by the University ofBrunel.

Due to the success of this activity, organizers Gabriel Gatica andNorbert Heuer (PUC) are already thinking of “Santiago Numérico II”,which should also be conducted at the Faculty of Mathematics at the PUCin January 2011.
