Opened the new Laboratory of Computational Security

After the talk “Using Jailbreakme technique to hack an iPad over SSL” given by Gabriel Acevedo, a McAfee Labs researcher, and Michael Price, speakers invited by the laboratory, on January 12 was launched the Computer Security Laboratory of the Response Group Computer Security Incident (CLCERT), which is located on the facilities of the Department of Computer Science (DCC).

At its inauguration attended Baloi Nelson, Director of DCC, Alejandro Hevia, DCC´s professor and  director of CLCERT, Marcos Kiwi, Alternate Director of the Laboratory, professor and DIM-CMM’s Research, Christian Orellana, Development Manager  of McAfee Labs and Dorian Guzmán, Operations Manager of  LTAM and McAfee Labs, as well as undergraduate and graduate students.

In the opportunity, Professor Alejandro Hevia thanked McAfee for the interest of working with the University and referred to the laboratory as a great contribution to the community. “It will be a place for all students wishing to work in computer security and cryptography, for those who want to ask questions, discuss or propose new ideas in related lines of research,” said.

Marcos Kiwi, CLCERT Alternate Director, underlined this initiative was conceived as a donation of MacAfee Labs-Chile ” and aims to be a place where DCC ‘students can perform practical activities on the type hands on, related to aspects of computational security in a protected and isolated ambiance from other networks. For this, MacAfee donated equipment (servers, desktops, switches, etc.), software, and participated in the design and implementation of various practical experiences, “said the Professor adding: “the students who participate in the  Security Club will have access to the lab, this club a joint effort between the MacAfee Labs and CLCERT. ”

Meanwhile, Dorian Guzmán, Operations Manager for Latin America of McAfee Labs, referred to the implementation of the laboratory as a major contribution to computer security in the world: “Sadly the computer security becomes famous by insecurity, since the likelihood and impact of attack is becoming higher. That is why as a company we want to help train good professionals in this area. In Chile there is a good opportunity to help create this profile; this is a way of collaborating to get more good people on our side. ”

At the end, Baloi Nelson, DCC Director stated that “the lab will be a great contribution to the Department and it is very important for students because today there is great demand and few supply in the area of cryptography.”

The CLCERT is an initiative born in 2001 in the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (FCFM) at the University of Chile. Its mission is to monitor and analyze security problems of computer systems in Chile, and reduce the number of security incidents perpetrated. This organization of scientific and technological transfer is bound to prevent, monitor, manage and respond to computer emergencies. Currently provides services for dissemination of warnings, studies and editorials incidents, training, analysis and market depth, advice and support to public institutions in the formulation of policies, standards and practices to ensure the security of critical infrastructure and computational resources of public institutions.http://www.clcert.cl/
