Fishing companies, government and academia. Three different worlds that need to cooperate for good results and efficiency. That’s what said Ray Hilborn, professor at the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, University of Washington, United States, invited by Universidad de Chile’s Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM) and Mathematical Department of Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (UTSFM).
Hilborn took part with CMM researcher Hector Ramírez in Jornadas de Modelamiento Matemático para la toma de decisiones en Evaluación y Gestión Pesquera, organized in partnership with UTSFM and Inria Chile.
The expert exposed his work in research programs at the Pacific coast and Alaska, involving academics and students working together with scientists, government and industry with the objective of greater understanding about fishery management.
“For academic departments, to really interact effectively with management agencies, the academics need to have something to offer. In the cases I know, what we offer is skills and people,” said.
In the opinion of Héctor Ramírez, “he is a worldwide recognized specialist in fisheries management. His talk put emphasis on the interaction between academia, industry and society.”
CMM scientists and researchers that attended this conference appreciated the visit, highlighting the mutual cooperation in these issues.
“The most important of this talk is the experience of the process of building a working group, to build a network over time, along with the results that they obtained in the case of fisheries”, said Salvador Flores, CMM Scientist.
