Recognizing Professor Eleuterio Toro ended the Numerical Analysis Meeting

During the official dinner of the “V Meeting of Numerical Analysis of Partial Differential Equations “, held between 9 and 11 last December at the PUC, there was a small tribute to the prestigious Chilean mathematician, Eleuterio Toro, for his 65th birthday (in 2011).

Professor Toro is currently working on the University of Trento in Italy and during the dinner, held on Friday 10 in the Restaurant “Meson Nerudiano” of Barrio Bellavista, his colleagues emphasized that Professor Toro did most of his scientific career in England, which was crowned a few years ago with an honorary recognition given by the Queen herself.

This is the fifth meeting of experts of Numerical Analysis that Professor Gabriel Gatica, Universidad de Concepción has been organizing for several years. The first three versions were co-organized with Erwin Hernández from UTFSM, and more recently 2009-2010 with Norbert Heuer from Pontificia Universidad Católica (PUC).

This time the meeting was attended by about 45 people, including 27 national and international exhibitors, and about 15 national undergraduate students from Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, USA, Germany, Spain, Italy, Scotland and Chile.
Worthy of special mention:

Todd Arbogast,, University of Texas at Austin, Texas, USA,
Pavel Bochev, Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA,
Francisco J. Sayas, University of Delaware, USA,
Ernst P. Stephan, Leibniz University of Hannover, Germany,

All of them are recognized international experts in the area of Numerical Analysis of Partial Differential Equations. Particularly, Pavel Bochev and Todd Arbogast are editor in chief and associate editor respectively of “SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis”, one of the most prestigious journals in the area.

Another interesting highlight of this event was the active participation, through presentations of their thesis work of 4 thesis students of “Doctoral in Applied Sciences with major in mathematical engineering” of the Universidad deConcepción.
