Researcher Servet Martínez becomes president of UMALCA

From January 2009 and for the next three years, the associatedresearcher of CMM will lead the Executive Committee of  UMALCA (for its name inSpanish). During his administration the mathematician expects strengthening thediscipline in the region.

The current president of the ChileanAcademy ofSciences and associate research of the Center Mathematical Modeling (CMM),Servet Martínez, assumed on January 1 as the new president of the MathematicalUnion of Latin America and the Caribbean to replace Jose Antonio La Peña, a professor at the UNAM andManaging Director of CONACYT of Mexico.

“My concern is the strengthening ofmathematics in the region,” explains Martínez. Toachieve it, the newly elected committee has proposed to organize, every twoyears, the “Latin American School of Mathematics (ELAM), in addition tothe traditional schools of Mathematics, Latin America and the Caribbean(EMALCAS) carried out two or three times a year.

One of the objectives of this organizationis to promote mathematics in less developed nations. “I hope UMALCAcontinues integrating the countries of the region, that the smallest integratesthe world’s mainstream of mathematics, that each developed center on of theregion works helping the smallest to be part of these mainstream” hestresses.

For Servet Martínez in its 13 years oflife, UMALCA has achieved “great maturity”. “There is a hugegrowth in the region, we look like a real scientific community, interacting,which is known and recognized,” the researcher added.

The first meeting of the new ExecutiveCommittee and Scientific Council of UMALCA, held January 8 and 9 at the Centerfor Modeling (CMM), was aimed, among others, to organize the III Latin AmericanCongress of Mathematicians (III CLAM 2009) which will take place between August31 to September 4 this year in Santiago. The organization of this activity, which expects to receive about300 mathematicians of the region, also involved the universities of Tarapacá,North Catholic, Valparaíso, Santiago de Chile, Concepción, del Bío Bío,Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, Pontificia Universidad Católicade Chile and the Universitad Técnica Federico Santa María.
