TheLaw of Large Numbers, from gambling to the study of probabilities is thename of the video done by researchers of the Millennium Nucleus on Informationand Randomness that aims to become a support for high school students in the learningof probabilities.
What is the chance?, How many times it is necessary to shuffle a deck of cardsto be sufficiently mixed, how is distributed the heat in a metal plate? Theseand other questions are addressed in this audiovisual work that intends tointroduce high school students and the general public on the subject of thestudy of probability, an area that is present in all spheres of human life andhas achieved great importance in the financial field, among others.
The video -which will be sent to 1,300 schools in Santiago and regions when classesstart in 2009 – is an invitation to know the odds from a mathematical point ofview, thanks to the use of simple concepts borrowed from various humanactivities such as gambling or applied research in biotechnology.
At the launch of this video made on November 20 at the Center for MathematicalModeling (CMM), attended researchers and engineers as well as authorities of theFaculty. Also participated in this activity students and teachers from schoolsAlonso de Ercilla, Altazor, Oratorio Don Bosco, Santa María de la Cordillera yColegio Madre Cecilia Lazzeri who received the video from the hands of the researchersServet Martínez and Jaime San Martín.
