Scientists and policy makers will attend symposium on air quality

South America is one of the regions with the highest urbanization concentration in the world and many of our cities have severe air pollution problems. Besides having negative effects on people’s health and ecosystems, pollution is a major driver of global change. Aware of this reality and to better quantify and address these problems, both the scientific and management authorities in the region need to be integrated, and for this reason it has been organized unprecedented event will bring together leading scientists and professionals from various public institutions of Santiago, Sao Paulo , Rio de Janeiro, Lima, Buenos Aires and Bogota.

Among others, one of the symposium's objectives is to establish a mixed community and evaluate observing and current modeling capabilities in order to move towards an integrated observing systems that allow a more efficient environmental management.

Among others, the international lecturers are Gregory Carmichael, Mary Anne Thompson Kanakidou and whose keynote lectures will be complemented with five training sessions that address topics such as Optimal network design of monitoring networks (atmospheric trace), atmospheric sounding techniques, Chemical weather forecasting, Building and constraining emission inventories and in situ measurements of gases and aerosols.

This symposium is co-organized by the Department of Geophysics (DGF) and the Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM) of our Faculty and it has been sponsored by Commission on Atmospheric Chemistry and Global Pollution (iCACGP), the World Meteorological Organization and the Inter American Institute on Global Change (IAI). This is also an activity that marks the closure of the successful five year project South American Emissions Megacities and Climate (SAEMC) that has been led by DGF ‘s faculty and CMM’s researcher, Laura Gallardo.
