From September 29 until October 16 was carried out the VIII Spring School ofDIM-CMM, which has among its objectives to publicize its Ph.D. Program inMathematics.
As every year, only the best Latin American undergraduate were selected to bepart of this activity. For two weeks the students had lessons of Calculus ofVariations, Mathematical Analysis of Fluid Mechanics Models, Convex Analysisand Mathematical Ecology, in addition to five different thematic talks.
For the coordinator of the Ph.D. Program, Prof. Juan Diego Dávila, this schoolis not only an excellent opportunity to spread the program, also is a way to learnmore about the capabilities of a potential Ph.D. student.
At the end of the courses the students had a test. Any of those who pass it succesfully could enter automatically to the Doctorate Program.
The motivations of students to participatein this school are varied. Some are looking for a thesis topic to completetheir degree, as is the case of Valeria Cardozo from
This activity also allows them to know what is being done in appliedmathematics at the Center for Mathematical Modeling and go deeper in some areas.”For me the lesson of convex analysis is very hard, because I had some gapsthat I filling through this course,” said Cesar Torres of the NationalUniversity of Trujillo, Peru.
