Successful workshop on computer security of CLCERT

During the event, that took place on October 20-21, participated national and international speakers, including members of FIRST and leading organizations in the field of computer security. Improving the protection of personal computers, computer crime, investigation and tracing of cyber crimes through emails, and security and cryptography projects developed by CLCERT, were addressed by the speakers.

The challenge to secure networks and systems

Professor Alejandro Hevia, director of CLCERT, was responsible for the opening and he did it describing the role must play the security person to withstand attacks 24 hours a day. “To do that, the professional should not only improve the level of security of their networks and systems also developing their capacity to respond security incidents.

Besides, he considered on the work of higher education institutions on computer safety. “It's certainly the work of universities to develop human capital in science and advanced technology to protect our networks, and simultaneously acquire and understand the state of the field of security and transfer it to the local community. The challenge of ensuring our systems and networks is enormous and involves every member of our community. It is in our will and determination to face it successfully,” he said.

During the ceremony the Undersecretary of the Interior, Patricio Rosende, gave a speech where he qualified as “fundamental priority” the computer security for the Government and its Ministry. He also acknowledged the work done by the University of Chile in this area and for “its continuing effort to generate updates, exchange and improvement of processes and information to reduce the number of incidents perpetrated from the network to national systems and their invaluable contribution in strengthening networks between national and international academic institutions.”

Also, the Undersecretary highlighted the agenda of CLCERT: “I would do a special tribute to the Computer Emergency Response Team for their continued contribution in training technicians and professional in charge of computers security.”

The CLCERT / FIRST Security Workshop was an activity open to the community and aimed to share new developments and technologies in the area of computer security and incident response. Finished, it was carried out, for two days more, a technical symposium at the Center for Mathematical Modeling, which included several forums so that members of FIRST – organism that brings together incident response and computer security teams worldwide-, share information about vulnerabilities, incidents, tools and any other matter related to the operation of these groups.

The CLCERT is an initiative born in 2001 in the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences with the mission to monitor and analyze thesecurity problems of computer systems in Chile, and to reduce the numberof security incidents from these attacks. This organization ofscientific-technological transfer is bound to prevent, monitor, manageand respond to computer emergencies. Currently provides serviceswarning dissemination, studies, events and editorials, as well astraining and market depth analysis. Also, CLCERT gives consulting andsupport to public institutions in the formulation of policies, practices and standards to ensure the security of criticalinfrastructure protection and the computing resources of public institutions.
