The pioneer diploma on computer security celebrates its 11th graduation ceremony

The diploma in Computer Security, the longest-established postgraduate degree in Chile in the area, held for the eleventh consecutive year its closing ceremony. In this event, which took place on 18th March 2015, sixteen students received their certificates after having taken seven courses taught by experts on these very current issues.  The Dean of the Faculty of Physical Sciences and Mathematics (FCFM) of Universidad de Chile, Patricio Aceituno, and the director of the Postgraduate School, Richard Weber, as well as friends and relatives, accompanied the graduates. They are professionals who come from various fields like the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, the Army or the National Railway Company.

“Since the first edition, the program has been mainly addressed to those people with a background on computer security. We would like that they apply the knowledge acquired in their careers”, pointed out Marcos Kiwi, co-director of the diploma and researcher at the Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM) of Universidad de Chile.

Indeed, he is, along with three other lecturers of the diploma, a member of CLCERT, group supported by CMM and the Department of Computer Science of the FCFM that for over 14 years has monitored computer systems and analyzed security problems in Chile. This entity aims to generate human resources with a strong expertise in this area.

“My enrollment was because of academics reasons, as I was a teacher at a technical school and I wanted to know more. But also, I plan to be employed in the security department of my institution. After an intense search among courses available, I found this one, which I found the most advanced and specialized “, explained German de la Rosa.

Participants realized over the six month long program how high and complex the demand for security has become due to the high concern of organizations. They saw problems arising from this situation, as well as legal aspects and tools implied.  “Among the subjects we went through, E-commerce and risk analysis were very interest to me”, added German.

Apart from the theory, this diploma also seeks to build an alumni network through the organization of several activities like talks or workshops. “The contacts I made here will be very useful for my work”, said Cyrill Schluep, who is auditor at the Central Bank of Chile and was awarded at the ceremony as “best student”.

After the graduation, a new path has been opened for Cyrill and German, as well as for the other students. They have joined a community committed with computer security, where “relations and trust with each other are crucial”, stressed Kiwi.
