Workshop discusses teachers training and their ability to teach mathematics

What do the cognitive sciences and psychology provide in the formation of an elementaryschool teacher to teach math? is the question that outstanding experts try to answer during the first session of a series ofworkshops organized by the team that leads the project “Standardsfor teachers training, together with the “Centro de Perfeccionamiento, Experimentación e Investigaciones Pedagógicas”, CPEIP .

On the first day atteded undergraduate student,  School teachers, researcher from the Center for MathematicalModeling (CMM) -University of Chile-, and professors responsible for training future teachers. The first workshop was aimed to understand the importance ofpsychology and cognitive science in the education of children, especially in those areas which are considered more difficult or those that show some learning disabilities in school children,such as mathematics.

The responsibles for delivering this subject were Giovanni Pierattini, Ministryof Education, David Preiss, a psychologist from Pontificia Universidad Católicade Chile, Roberto Araya, researcher at the Centro de Investigación Avanzada en Educación, CIAE.

Another teo workshop will be held on July 22 and 29, in which will be treated important issues, such as: “What are the features required to recruit a teacherto teach basic math” and “Conclusions and implementation of MECESUP projects for training teachers of second level with a specialization inmathematics. ”

The activity takes place in Room 205, at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematical Sciences, U. de Chile, located on Avenida Blanco Encalada 2120.
