Workshop gathers experts on cellular automata

The first time the workshop Automata was held in our country was in 1998. After 13 years, the Center for Mathematical Modeling organized a new version of this activity that brought together researchers in the field of dynamical systems and theoretical computer science who have studied the cellular automata.

As explained Ivan Rapaport, one of the organizers, scientists belonging to these two communities do not always have the possibility to exchange their experiences: “However, this time, and since in the CMM are present both approaches, there has been a Interestingly balance that has greatly enriched the interaction between researchers. “

During the three days of this workshop were presented both theoretical and applied work. Specifically the applied work has used cellular automata to model phenomena such as radiation-induced cell damage, the growth of biofilms or the generation of random numbers for cryptography.

Silvio Capobianco an Italian researcher at the Institute of Cybernetics at Tallinn University of Technolog,  Estonia has participated in the last four versions of AUTOMATA. About this one Capobianco highlighted the quality of the presentations and lecturers. “It has aldo been a good opportunity to establish ties with other scientists and exchange views on our work,” he explained.

Among the exhibitors, Automata was attended by the prominent mathematician Peter Gacs, who is now professor of Computer Science at the University of Boston and who has excelled in their contributions to the theory of computational complexity.
